Overview

The J.D. programme is a full-time 3-year programme, comprising 22 courses totaling 25 course units ( Each course carries one course unit unless stated otherwise). The curriculum was formulated by legal academics and practitioners after extensive discussions, and endorsed by Singapore Institute of Legal Education and Ministry of Law.

The academic year begins in mid-August and follows the same academic calendar/grading scheme as the LL.B programme. The programme may be accelerated in some cases for completion within 2 to 2.5 years subject to the approval of the J.D. Committee, which will take into consideration their first term's exam grades.

Teaching Approach

The J.D. programme bears the SMU's distinctives of holistic learning, active seminar-style pedagogy and international and practical exposure, amongst others.

Students engage in a substantial amount of pre-class preparatory reading and thinking, and they participate actively in class discussion. Our experience is that the interactive/participative learning environment in the school helps develop confidence and analytical and presentation skills -- attributes which are essential for excelling in the legal and corporate world.

Classes are deliberately kept small and a multi-faceted approach to course assessment is adopted. This includes class participation, term assignments and oral and written presentations. The end of term written examination (usually open book) typically accounts for a maximum of 50% of the final grade in a course. A significant amount of time is devoted to group presentations.

A distinctive feature of the J.D. programme is that lawyers from practice, government and the judiciary will be invited to participate in classroom teaching. This will provide our students with the opportunity to integrate practical expertise with theory and doctrine.

Award of the Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree

The J.D. programme is a meritorious honours programme. On successful completion, students will be awarded the degree accordingly, depending on their overall performance: J.D. (merit), J.D. (high merit), J.D. cum laude (with distinction), J.D. magna cum laude (with high distinction) or J.D. summa cum laude (with highest distinction).

Students will qualify for legal practice in Singapore (admitted as Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore) if they attain a GPA of at least 3.00 in the courses leading to the J.D. degree, and complete the Preparatory Course leading to Part B of the Singapore Bar Examinations conducted by the Singapore Legal Institute of Education, subject to the "Qualified Person" requirements imposed by the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules.

This framework is subject to changes from Ministry of Law and the Singapore Institute of Legal Education. These changes are beyond the control of SMU

AMICABLE DISPUTE RESOLUTION (ADR) COMPETITIONS

SMU law students have the opportunity to learn about Amicable Dispute Resolution (ADR) through a wide range of electives offered by the curriculum. Students have also further honed their negotiation and mediation skills by participating in several international ADR competitions under the guidance of faculty and professional mediators.

Learn more about the competitions SMU has taken part in in the links below:

Advocate Maximus Competition

The first of its kind, the Advocate Maximus competition was started in 2018 and features both a mediation and an arbitration component. Organised by PACT, the competition aims to provide a global platform for law students to practice mixing dispute resolution modes and is held in India.

ALSA International Mediation Competition

The ALSA International Mediation Competition (AIMC) is a means to promote, incite and disseminate the use of mediation among younger generations of professionals with a mind-set of effectively resolving disputes. The AIMC enables students with different backgrounds and academic training to have the opportunity to enhance their mediation skills in an international setting, and encourage the effective use of mediation and an open exchange of ideas, experience and know-how between students from different countries, cultures, generations and backgrounds. The focus of AIMC is to effectively combine the use of the Mediator and collaborative problem-solving skills to successfully present the Parties’ interests and progress towards resolution. ALSA wishes to empower tomorrow’s business people and legal practitioners to better meet the dispute resolution needs of an increasingly cross-cultural and global market.  The Competition consists of two Preliminary Rounds and one Quarter Final Rounds and one Semi Final Round and one Final Round. Participants will also have to prepare a Mediation Plan.

APIIT Law School International Negotiation Competition

Academy Publishing Award

Associate Professor Goh Yihan (Dean of School of Law), Professor Yeo Tiong Min and Associate Professor Chandra Mohan have received the Academy Publishing award on 11 August 2017 from the Honourable the Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon in appreciation of their significant contributions to Academy Publishing.

The Public Law Research Cluster (PLRC) is broadly concerned with constitutional and administrative law, the rule of law, public administration and governance in Singapore, Southeast and East Asia, and other parts of the world. Members of the cluster are concerned with the organisation of the state, the inter-relationship between the government, civil society, and the individual as well as the governance of public bodies exercising statutory or other powers or performing public duties.  In addition, the rights of the individual vis-à-vis the state, how law, institutions, and norms promote good governance, how political power and public law functions are legitimated, how abuses of public power are prevented or remedied form the focus of the research cluster.  Through a variety of methodologies, featuring both theory, practice and an inter-disciplinary sensitivity, the aspiration of the Cluster is to generate and disseminate research through a variety of platforms to enable stakeholders gain a broader understanding of public law, legal theory, and the latest developments in scholarly research.  Public law scholarship also provides an important pathway for greater public participation in government against the constantly evolving contemporary landscape.

Every great law school needs evidence of a commitment to research around issues of social justice.  Our approach is to cross-over what has come to be known in Singapore as community law, through fields such as criminal law and procedure, criminal justice, family law, and law and animal welfare.  These fields of legal service delivery have practical and theoretical research interests and colleagues in the cluster seek to explore issues at a jurisdictional and international level.  In addition, considerations of the unique feature of Singaporean and Asian communities feature in the research direction of approaches to social justice scholarship, and access to justice themes.

This Cluster focuses on broad and deep normative questions concerning amongst others the concept and purpose of law, how businesses and professionals including lawyers should conduct themselves by reference to ethical norms and the proper education of and for the benefit of lawyers and law students. We research on three broad and inter-connected disciplines namely (i) Legal Theory (the study of legal philosophy and jurisprudence, and law’s interactions with Regulation and Economics); (ii) Ethics (with a focus on Business and Professional Ethics including Legal Ethics); and (iii) Legal Education. These questions and disciplines are approached from the perspectives of both theory and practice.
