SMU law students are encouraged to broaden their horizons and maximise their learning experience by going abroad. These global exposure opportunities can be in the form of international student exchanges and the law study missions. Aside from giving students the chance to be exposed to university life in an overseas university, these overseas trips help them to understand the different cultures, provide global perspectives and create networking opportunities that are critical to their future careers.

Legal internships acquaint students with the practical workings of the legal system and are a valuable part of the preparation of students for legal practice.

LLB and JD students are required to undertake 10 and 6 weeks of internship respectively as a graduation requirement. These internships must be of a sufficiently legal nature and may be undertaken at law firms and legal departments of a government ministry, corporations, banks, and so on, or with the Singapore legal service.

The School of Law has partnered with numerous law firms and other organizations for such internships, and is continually seeking new internship opportunities for students.

SMU LAW ALUMNI

Even after our students graduate, we continue to stay connected and support them in whatever way we can. We are immensely proud of their achievements.

The achievement of our graduates is the best testament to the effectiveness and quality of the education we provide here at the Yong Pung How School of Law. Since our first cohort of students graduated 14 years ago, many alumni have gone on to make their mark in industry, public service, academia, and other parts of the legal profession. Alumni from our pioneer cohorts have been appointed partners in esteemed law firms, while others have struck out on their own to establish their own private practices (such as BlackOak LLC and Breakpoint LLC) and legal tech start-ups (such as INTELLLEX and Regall). Yet others have taken up positions in the Judiciary.

We are proud to say that our young graduates have continuously punched well above their weight – they are highly sought after, well-placed, and competitively remunerated. Year after year, our graduates are significantly represented on the prestigious Justices’ Law Clerk programme in the Supreme Court. A number of our graduates have gone on to pursue postgraduate studies in world-renowned institutions such as Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge.

Our graduates have consistently attained close to full employment soon after graduation, with some of the highest starting salaries. The 2023 Graduate Employment Survey published by the Ministry of Education in February 2024 shows that our graduates from the Class of 2022, who have recently completed their Bar examinations and training contracts, enjoyed an overall employment rate of 99.2%, drawing a mean gross salary of up to $6,690. This is a testament to the quality of our graduates and shows that our approach to education fits market demands.

To find out more about the many exciting things our alumni do, check out our Alumni Newsletters below.

The YPHSL Student Fund provides vital support for financially challenged students, be it as bursaries, emergency relief, student awards, law study mission grants, student exchange grants, and textbook grants.

For Donations of $300 or more to this fund, your name will be inscribed on our Alumni Wall.
