SYNOPSIS
SMULA is proud to present a panel comprising a representative from PDPC, a practitioner, and two experienced in-house counsel who are both Management Committee members of AsiaDPO, to discuss the upcoming amendments to Singapore’s PDPA. The discussion will be moderated by Assoc Prof Warren Chik, who is Deputy Director of SMU’s Centre for AI and Data Governance.
On 14 May 2020, the Singapore Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) and the Personal Data Protection Commission of Singapore (PDPC) announced a public consultation (the Public Consultation) on the draft Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Bill (the Draft Bill) and related amendments to the Spam Control Act (SCA). The Draft Bill follows a series of consultations between the MCI, PDPC, and public and industry stakeholders that took place over the past 3 years. Among other things, the Draft Bill proposes the following amendments to the PDPA:
- Introduction of mandatory breach notification;
- Introduction of offences concerning the mishandling of personal data;
- Alternate bases to the collection, use and disclosure of personal data by enabling meaningful consent;
- Introduction of a new data portability obligation; and
- Enhanced financial penalties for breaches.
The panel will walk participants through the upcoming amendments, and share practical insights on what these changes will entail for organisations. Participants will also get a valuable opportunity to hear PDPC’s perspectives and insights behind these amendments.
All legal or privacy professionals, including Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in any organisation, will find this webinar highly topical and relevant.
