This seminar discusses notable case law developments pertaining to the Rules of Court 2021. These rules are meant to represent a significant shift from the old regime, with a greater than ever emphasis on case management. Topics that will be covered include the Five Ideals, Interests of Justice, and other staple interlocutory applications.
This session is part of the SMU Law Academy “Recent Highlights” series. Designed with the busy practitioner in mind, this series provides participants with a convenient platform to obtain timely and practical bite-sized analysis of the latest developments in various areas of the law. The series will be taught by leading and experienced experts curated from academia and practice. Each topic in the series is distilled into a short-duration online webinar so that busy legal professionals can be effectively updated with the most material developments affecting their practice.
SPEAKERS
Chen Siyuan
Siyuan is an Associate Professor of Law at SMU, where he is also an Associate Dean and Director of Moots. He graduated from NUS with first class honours and did his LLM at Harvard. A former JLC and Assistant Registrar, Siyuan’s research interests lie in evidence and procedure. His works have been cited by the High Court, Court of Appeal, SICC, and UK Law Reform Commission. His works include The Law of Evidence in Singapore (Sweet & Maxwell: 2022) and Halsbury’s Laws of Singapore (LexisNexis: 2021), and his articles have been published in journals such as Civil Justice Quarterly, International Journal of Evidence & Proof, and International Commentary on Evidence.
Lionel Leo
Lionel is a Partner at WongPartnership LLP. His main areas of practice are commercial litigation and international commercial arbitration. He also regularly acts in criminal cases pro bono under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme. Lionel graduated from NUS with first class honours and having been awarded the Punch Coomaraswamy Prize for being the top student in the Law of Evidence. He later obtained his BCL Masters degree from the University of Oxford. A former JLC and Assistant Registrar, Lionel has a deep interest in the law of evidence and civil procedure. He is co-author of The Law of Evidence in Singapore (Sweet & Maxwell: 2022) and has contributed chapters to the White Book, Singapore Civil Procedure (Sweet & Maxwell) from 2016-2022.
