SYNOPSIS

Law practices, like all workplaces, are not immune to issues of toxic behaviour such as bullying and harassment. In fact, the high-pressure and fast paced nature of legal work often result in lawyers and legal staff experiencing such toxic behaviour in some way or another, whether deliberate or inadvertent. This seminar aims to equip participants with the awareness of the legal limits of workplace conduct, when such conduct crosses the line both legally and professionally, and what steps one may take to mitigate or to avoid such occurrences from the perspectives of the subordinate, supervisor, and the organization.

Participants will gain an understanding of the legal framework which protects employees from inappropriate conduct including the Protection from Harassment Act, the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Workplace Harassment, the Tripartite Guidelines on Fair Employment Practices and relevant professional conduct rules for lawyers. The session will explore practical strategies for preventing workplace misconduct, responding effectively to complaints, and creating firm-level policies and systems that support dignity and respect at work.

Through case studies and scenario-based discussions, attendees will explore how to identify and manage workplace bullying and harassment, including power imbalances between partners and junior staff, discrimination masked as performance management and such, and the risks and long term negative impact of silent complicity. The seminar will also address the role of ethical leadership in setting behavioural norms and the importance of trust, transparency, and psychological safety in building resilient teams.

Whether you're a practice leader, HR manager, in-house counsel, or junior lawyer, this session provides actionable insights to strengthen both your legal risk management and your workplace culture.
