SYNOPSIS

The Rules of Court 2021 represent a significant shift from the old regime.

In this Masterclass, the speakers will examine some of the key changes, including: (a) the five ideals; (b) the interests of justice test, especially in comparison with how it has worked under the Evidence Act; (c) the new expert evidence regime and how it interacts with the Evidence Act; (d) how the ROC 2021 provisions on legal professional privilege interact with existing common law rules (and the Evidence Act); (e) the exploration of amicable dispute resolution; and (f) the consolidated application process or SAPT.

The SMU Law Academy Expert Masterclasses are advanced skills and case-study based programmes where participants will learn from the industry’s top experts in a specific area of practical importance. Typically taught in a face-to-face format, such sessions will help participants to acquire practical in-depth knowhow to aid their development. All the masterclass instructors are specially curated and are recognised as experts in their areas. 

 

SPEAKERS

Chen Siyuan
Siyuan is an Associate Professor of Law at SMU, where he is also an Associate Dean and Director of Moots. He graduated from NUS with first class honours and did his LLM at Harvard. A former JLC and Assistant Registrar, Siyuan’s research interests lie in evidence and procedure. His works have been cited by the High Court, Court of Appeal, SICC, and UK Law Reform Commission. His works include The Law of Evidence in Singapore (Sweet & Maxwell: 2022) and Halsbury’s Laws of Singapore (LexisNexis: 2021), and his articles have been published in journals such as Civil Justice Quarterly, International Journal of Evidence & Proof, and International Commentary on Evidence.

Lionel Leo
Lionel is a Partner at WongPartnership LLP. His main areas of practice are commercial litigation and international commercial arbitration. He also regularly acts in criminal cases pro bono under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme. Lionel graduated from NUS with first class honours and having been awarded the Punch Coomaraswamy Prize for being the top student in the Law of Evidence. He later obtained his BCL Masters degree from the University of Oxford. A former JLC and Assistant Registrar, Lionel has a deep interest in the law of evidence and civil procedure. He is co-author of The Law of Evidence in Singapore (Sweet & Maxwell: 2022) and has contributed chapters to the White Book, Singapore Civil Procedure (Sweet & Maxwell) from 2016-2022.

Registration fee of S$267.50* (inclusive of GST) applies.

*Please note that there will be no refund of any fees should the participant cancel the registration/ fail to attend the event. However, registration is transferable. Notice of any change in participant should be sent to the Academy via email: smulawacademy [at] smu.edu.sg, by 18 November 2022.

SMU Law Academy reserves the right to cancel or postpone any event. In such case, we will arrange for the refund of fees paid.
