Cryptoasset markets have lost approximately US$ 2 trillion in value since their 2021 peak. This situation and the collapse of some stablecoins and service providers worldwide are changing the regulatory landscape in this field. Also, legal questions about the legal nature of digital assets, conflict of laws, and the treatment of cryptoassets in insolvency proceedings are at the centre of the current developments.
By the end of this Masterclass, participants will be able to understand the main risks of cryptoassets, such as consumer protection, technology risks, money laundering and terrorist financing, and systemic risk. The course also provides an overview of the different regulatory approaches adopted worldwide and in Singapore to mitigate those risks, and therefore, learners will be able to assess how the different legal categories to virtual assets apply to the variety of cryptoassets deployed in markets (i.e. stablecoins, governance tokens, cryptocurrencies, decentralized finance, non-fungible tokens.). Likewise, participants will be able to critically analyse the regulatory responses, the gaps the regulators still need to address and its impact for these markets and consumers. Finally, the Masterclass will discuss some practical recent cases to shed light on the relevance and implications of some of the legal challenges in this field.
The SMU Law Academy Expert Masterclasses are advanced skills and case-study based programmes where participants will learn from the industry’s top experts in a specific area of practical importance.
