SYNOPSIS

This 4-hour advanced masterclass explores cutting-edge applications of Large Language Models (LLMs) in the legal sector. Designed for legal professionals with a basic understanding of generative AI, this course delves into advanced techniques, practical implementations, and emerging trends shaping the future of AI in law.

The masterclass is structured as follows:

1. Advanced LLM Techniques (40 minutes):

  • Exploration of methods to enhance LLM performance in legal contexts
  • Strategies for improving output quality and relevance in complex legal tasks

2. Augmented Intelligence in Legal Applications (40 minutes):

  • Examination of how LLMs can be integrated with other technologies to enhance legal work
  • Discussion of real-world implementations and their impact on legal practice

3. Practical Workshop: Hands-on LLM Application (50 minutes):

  • Guided exercise in developing or using an LLM-powered tool for legal tasks
  • Exploration of user-friendly platforms for implementing AI in legal workflows 

4. Quality Assurance and Evaluation (40 minutes):

  • Methods for assessing and ensuring the reliability of LLM outputs in legal contexts
  • Best practices for integrating AI tools into existing legal processes

5. Ethical and Professional Considerations (30 minutes):

  • Analysis of key ethical challenges when using LLMs in legal practice
  • Strategies for maintaining professional standards and client trust

6. Future Landscape of AI in Law (25 minutes):

  • Overview of emerging technologies and their potential impact on legal practice
  • Discussion on preparing for the evolving role of AI in the legal profession


Throughout the masterclass, participants will engage in interactive discussions and practical exercises. The session aims to provide attendees with advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in applying LLMs to legal practice, equipping them with the skills to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-driven legal innovation.

SPEAKER

Assistant Professor (Practice) Lim How Khang holds cross-appointments with the School of Law and the School of Information Systems at Singapore Management University (SMU). Trained in Computer Science and in Law, he is Director of the SMU Centre for Computational Law (CCLAW) and Programme Director of the SMU BSc (Computing & Law) degree. He currently teaches the course “Essential Technology for Lawyers” at SMU to introduce law students to fundamental computing concepts and emerging technologies.
