Illuminating the Future of Corporate Governance in Asia: Shareholder Stewardship and ESG

SYNOPSIS

When the UK released the world’s first stewardship code in 2010 there were great expectations that it would improve the UK’s corporate governance and avert another Global Financial Crisis. Asia appeared to embrace these great expectations as more stewardship codes were adopted in Asia than in any other region in the world. Drawing on the research in the recently published book, Global Shareholder Stewardship (Cambridge University Press, 2022) this seminar will highlight how stewardship codes work (or don’t), why they have been embraced in Asia and what their impact has been on corporate governance. This overview will provide valuable insights as the Book has received glowing praise globally as a “goldmine of information” that is “essential reading for those seeking to understand the evolving pattern of global corporate governance” and “a must read for anyone interested in the regulation of financial markets, institutional investors, or corporate governance”.

The seminar will then extend on the findings in the Book by specifically considering the role that stewardship may (or may not) play in the future of ESG in Asia. It will highlight the latest information on the relationship between stewardship and ESG by bringing together the Book’s authors from several leading economies in Asia to provide their insights on this timely issue. The second part of the seminar will consider what other corporate governance mechanisms  – aside from shareholder stewardship – are driving ESG in the Asia-Pacific.  There will be updates on the most important developments in ESG in Australia, China, India, Malaysia, and Singapore from leading corporate governance scholars from each jurisdiction to illuminate the future of ESG in corporate governance in Asia. Ultimately, this seminar will provide cutting-edge information from leading corporate law scholars in Asia on the role of shareholder stewardship, its impact on ESG, and the other forces driving the ESG movement in Asia.
