Public Lecture - Step By Step In Patent

by Professor Alison Firth

University of Surrey

Chair and Moderator: Professor Irene Calboli,
Singapore Management University

SYNOPSIS

This lecture will focus on inventor-ship and patent infringement. First, Professor Alison Firth will draw some comparisons with the laws of defamation and copyright infringement, based on the work of Svantesson (2012) and Hyland (2014). These scholars apply a step-by-step approach to analysing those torts on the internet. Professor Firth will question whether it might be useful to apply a similar analysis in patent law? Certainly for assessing infringement of process/method patents, maybe for contributory infringement. She will also discuss application of a stepwise assessment to the identification of inventors. Again, comparison with copyright law may assist.

SPEAKER

Alison Firth is Professor Emeritus at the University of Surrey and Visiting Professor at Newcastle University (UK) and Queen Mary, University of London. Her interests cover intellectual property and its relationship with other areas of the law. For the past few years she has been fortunate enough to visit Singapore to teach a patent law course for the Intellectual Property Academy. Recent publications include books, chapters and articles on trade marks, copyright, designs, judicial remedies and competition law.
