SYNOPSIS

Conference on Sustainable Development and Commerce in ASEAN Cities

With a population of over 600 million people contributing to a combined GDP of more than US$3 trillion, the ASEAN region will be an increasingly significant actor in the global economy in the coming years. At the same time, that growth will require urgent attention to be paid to associated issues such as infrastructure design, urbanisation and pollution. Governments and regulators must now also account for the additional effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced them to accelerate their plans for change and development.

Against this background, the ASEAN Law Research Network organises this Conference on Sustainable Development and Commerce in ASEAN Cities. Join us as we discuss the vital questions above with prominent industry leaders, legal academics and lawyers.

Professor Rafael Leal-Arcas (Queen Mary University of London) will deliver a Keynote Speech on “Using International Trade Law to Promote Sustainable Development”. Hear also from business leaders at the Industry Panel on “Responsible Business and Commerce in ASEAN”, where Ms Elsa Chen (Partner & Chief Economist, Allen & Gledhill LLP), Ms Melissa Koh (Senior Legal Director, Accenture Pte Ltd) and Mr Gareth Wong (CEO, Mitbana Pte Ltd) will share their deep experience in their respective fields of expertise. The Panel will be moderated by Professor Archan Misra (Vice Provost (Research), SMU).

The Conference is also an important gathering point for legal researchers across ASEAN to present studies on sustainable urban growth and commerce from a wide variety of angles. Three academic panels will be convened on the themes on “Energy, Technology and the Environment”, “Sustainable Trade, Finance and Investment in ASEAN” and “Designing ESG Rules and Frameworks for Southeast Asia”.
