SYNOPSIS
This seminar will focus on regulatory developments regarding the intersection of financial technology and financial regulations in Singapore since 2016, in particular the development of the idea of regulatory sandbox and other proposals to promote or facilitate the application of technology in finance. The seminar will first outline generally the application of financial technology and practical legal issues facing some technology firms or financial institutions. The regulatory sandbox approach adopted in Singapore as well as other major competitors (such as the UK or Hong Kong) as well as existing sandboxes approved since 2015 will then be considered. The speaker will also look at the potential legal implications these developments hold for the future. He will also explore and update some major regulatory developments in Singapore regarding financial technology in the past two years.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr Christopher Chen is an Associate Professor of Law at the Singapore Management University (SMU). He received a Ph.D. from University of London (UCL). Christopher Chen's main research interests include financial regulation, derivatives and risk management, financial consumer protection, corporate governance and transplantation of law in Asia in broad areas of corporate, banking, insurance and financial laws. Christopher Chen has published in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
