Synopsis
In this lecture, Professor Calboli analyzes the emergence of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology and its impact on the luxury industry and the protection of luxury trademarks. The rapid advance of 3D printing, combined with the decreasing cost of 3D printers, has brought the topic of 3D printing to the forefront of the debate about the future of product manufacturing. Similar to previous introductions of new technologies in other sectors, 3D printing has the potential to revolutionize the luxury industry (and other industries) and calls for concern have been voiced stressing its possible negative impact on the industry and the protection of luxury trademarks. In this lecture, Professor Calboli addresses these calls and, while she recognizes that 3D printing may indeed present a challenge for the traditional business models adopted by the luxury industry, she stresses that 3D printing also represents an important business opportunity. In particular, she argues that law makers should resist pressures to restrict the use of, and to generally over-regulate 3D printing, with additional trademark protection. To the contrary, granting such additional protection may negatively impact the luxury industry, and technological progress, in the long term.
