SYNOPSIS
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become omnipresent in today’s business environment: from chatbots to healthcare services to various ways of creating useful information. While AI has been increasingly used to optimize various creative and innovative processes, the integration of AI into products, services, and other operational procedures raises significant concerns across virtually all areas of intellectual property (IP) law. While AI has drawn extensive attention from IP experts globally and there have been some works on specific issues in the intersection and AI and IP, surprisingly there has not been much discussion about a broad and comprehensive picture from the perspectives of the very nature of AI technology, its commercial implications, its interaction with different kinds of IP, IP administration, software and data, and its social and economic impact on the overall innovation policy, and ultimately AI’s eligibility as a legal entity. This conference aims to fill the gap.
The conference is co-organized by the Applied Research Centre for Intellectual Assets and the Law (“ARCIALA”) at the School of Law, Singapore Management University (SMU), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Faculty of Law and the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition (Munich) and is to be held at the SMU School of Law on November 28-29, 2019. We trust that the conference will appeal to scholars, policymakers, judges, practitioners, and educators with an interest in the intersection of IP law and AI technologies. It focuses on the immediate legal impact of AI technological developments in jurisdictions such as China, E.U., India, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and the U.S. The conference discusses not only theoretical problems but also actual implementations of novel, technology-friendly laws. It also deals with setting the guidelines for regulators from different jurisdictions, who contemplate amending or “upgrading” their existing IP laws. The conference will analyse existing technological trends and their legal implications.
