In this presentation, Professor Nadja Alexander examines international mediation developments since the coming into force of the Singapore Convention on Mediation in 2020. Drawing on the trends identified in the SIDRA Survey on International Dispute Resolution, she explores the increasing and differentiated use of mediation in mixed mode procedures, how technology is challenging conventional understandings of mediation, and corresponding shifts in international mediation law and practice.

Professor Nadja Alexander is recognized as a thought leader in the field of mediation. She has pioneered systems for international mediation law and practice. Nadja’s work is used widely in the context of legal and institutional reform and mediator professionalization. She has won numerous awards for her publications as well as her training. Nadja was a foundation member of the International Advisory Board of the United Nations Global Mediation Panel and is is a Lead Academic for the APEC Online Dispute Resolution Collaborative Framework. Her books include EU Mediation Law Handbook, International and Comparative Mediation, and the Singapore Convention on Mediation. She is lead author of the SIDRA Dispute Resolution Survey Report, published every two years. Nadja is Professor of Law and Director of the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy (SIDRA) at the Singapore Management University School of Law.

A full-time mediator, Francis Goh brings with him over three decades of experience as an advocate and solicitor, arbitrator, and mediator, applying a problem-solving mindset to dispute resolution.
A graduate of the National University of Singapore, he was called to the Singapore Bar in 1991 and has since maintained a pioneering presence in dispute resolution.
An accredited Mediator since 2001, Francis is an early adopter of mediation, both as counsel and mediator. Francis pioneered the art of mediation advocacy and brings a problem-solving mindset to dispute resolution. Francis is adept at the mediation process to help parties negotiate win-win outcomes for their disputes.
Francis is a Principal Mediator at the Singapore Mediation Centre, a Specialist Mediator at the Singapore International Mediation Centre, a Senior Mediator with the Law Society Mediation Scheme, and serves as an international Mediator with the AAA-ICDR and Sage Mediation He is an accredited mediator and mediation advocate with the Singapore International Mediation Institute and the International Mediation Institute. Francis is a Research Fellow with SIDRA, and is a mediation trainer, coach, assessor, as well as mentor. He sits as an adjudicator with the Financial Industry Dispute Resolution Centre, and he currently serves as the Chairperson of the Advocacy Committee of the Law Society of Singapore.

Ms. Amanda Lees

Amanda is head of international arbitration for Australia and Singapore at King & Wood Mallesons and has been based in Singapore for nearly 14 years.
Amanda acts as counsel in large complex disputes, in ad hoc and institutional arbitrations, across a range of industries. Amanda represented the Republic of Indonesia in its successful defence of a US$580M claim under the India-Indonesia BIT in relation to a coal project in Kalimantan. She has also represented clients as international counsel in the Singapore International Commercial Court.
Amanda has had 27 appointments as arbitrator by SIAC, ICC, LCIA, DIAC, HKIAC and AIAC including as emergency arbitrator, sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator and presiding arbitrator. Her appointments have involved parties from more than 20 different jurisdictions represented by a wide range of counsel. Amanda is listed on multiple institutional panels (SIAC, HKIAC, ICDR (AAA), JCAA and AIAC).
Amanda does not act as a mediator but is a proponent for mediation, who has seen many disputes settle either during or shortly after a mediation.
Amanda is a Fellow and Vice Chair of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrator’s Singapore Branch, Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, Vice Chair of the Australian ICC Nomination Commission, member of the ACICA Legislative Committee and ICDR Asia Advisory Council. She is ranked as a leading individual for international arbitration by Legal 500 and ‘most in-demand arbitrator’ in Chambers Global.

A/Prof Darius Chan is Deputy Director of the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy and teaches dispute resolution at Singapore Management University and the Singapore Institute of Legal Education. Concurrently, Darius practices as an independent arbitrator and advocate with Breakpoint LLC and Fountain Court Chambers. Darius has been appointed emergency, sole, party and presiding arbitrator under a variety of governing laws. Additionally, Darius acts an independent legal expert and he has provided opinions for the Chinese, Swiss and U.S. courts. Darius has been ranked a Litigation Star by Benchmark Litigation, a Band 1 Junior by Legal 500, and a Global Elite Thought Leader by Who's Who Legal Arbitration Future Leaders.
