SYNOPSIS

Baker McKenzie and the SMU Centre for Commercial Law in Asia are proud to bring you this exciting seminar series focusing on sustainability and commercial law.

In the first seminar of the series, our distinguished speakers discussed business opportunities and sentiments on the advancement of ESG initiatives across the Asia Pacific region.

In this second seminar of the series, we will hear from speakers from Conservation International, Singapore Exchange, UBS and the Singapore Management University who will discuss the key issues surrounding ESG reporting and disclosures for businesses operating in the Asia Pacific region. Join these market and thought leaders at a constructive and interactive dialogue with complimentary attendance. In this 90-minute webinar, we will explore:

  • existing upstream and downstream ESG reporting and disclosures practices;

  • top of mind legal challenges surrounding ESG reporting and disclosure in the Asia Pacific region;

  • the taxonomy landscape in the Asia Pacific region, and the benefits of having a region-wide taxonomy for ESG reporting and disclosure; and

  • the future of ESG reporting and disclosures for the Asia Pacific region.

May Loh is a Senior Advisor with ASG’s East Asia & Pacific practice. She draws on expertise and networks developed over decades at the intersection of Singapore’s public, private, and social sectors to help clients navigate markets in the region.

Beginning as a law clerk to the Chief Justice and moving on to senior roles in government including in the Competition Commission of Singapore and the Attorney General’s Chambers, Ms Loh was with the Singapore Legal Service for more than 20 years. At Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower, she worked on foreign manpower policy, labor relations, and negotiated free trade agreements. Ms Loh later moved to focus on non-profit work and headed the development team at Stewardship Asia, leading work to promote effective stewardship and governance in businesses across Asia.

In 2020, Ms Loh founded Lucidity Advisors Pte Ltd, prioritizing public policy, corporate governance, and sustainability issues particularly in the start-up and investment sector. She is active on various boards, including that of the Securities Investors Association and the Singapore University of Technology and Design. She is Chair of The Helping Hand, a halfway house, and started the Honour Champions Group on Sustainability, part of Honour Singapore. Ms Loh is also an alumni advisor to the Singapore delegation of the St Gallen Symposium.

She received an LL.M. from Harvard Law School and her LL.B. from the University of Kent. She is based in Singapore.

Stefanie Schacherer
Assistant Professor of Law
Yong Pung How School of Law
Singapore Management University

Dr Stefanie Schacherer is Assistant Professor of Law at the Singapore Management University (SMU). Prior to joining SMU, she held positions as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for International Law, National University of Singapore, and at the World Trade Institute, University of Bern. Dr Schacherer obtained a Ph.D. in International Law from the University of Geneva and the University of Vienna, and holds an LL.M. from King’s College London, and a Master and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Geneva.

Dr Schacherer has published widely on sustainable development and international investment law. Her monograph titled Sustainable Development in EU Foreign Investment Law was published in August 2021 with Brill Nijhoff. She is a member of the UNCITRAL Academic Forum on Investor-State Dispute Settlement and serves as an advisor to the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

Chan Kum Kong
Managing Director
Head of Research & Analysis, Equities
Singapore Exchange

Mr Chan is the Head of Research and Analysis at Singapore Exchange, responsible for research content, data analytics and client coverage. As a strong advocate for investor education, he manages a team that produces content to highlight important market developments to empower investors. Singapore Exchange has one of the largest subscriber bases in Singapore receiving the team’s research content.

With over 20 years of experience in the finance industry, Mr Chan has taken up roles on both the buy-side and sell-side in various locations including Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore. Prior to SGX, Mr Chan led the equity investment team at DBS Asset Management in Singapore. He was also actively involved in product development and led the launch of the STI ETF in 2009. In Shanghai, Mr Chan held the role of Head of Research at Nomura Securities covering China’s domestic A- shares market. In Seoul, he was a Technology Analyst covering the semiconductor sector and saw the transformation of Korean semiconductor companies into global leaders. Before joining Nomura Securities, Mr Chan was at Bank of America Equity Partners, a private equity firm investing extensively across Asia. He was involved in transactions in Japan, India and Southeast Asia across various industries in the mid-nineties.

Russell Quek
Associate Director
UBS

Russell is an Associate Director with the Sustainable Finance Office APAC at UBS.

Prior to UBS, Russell was a Climate Finance lawyer at a leading international law practice, advising on sustainability issues such as the development of new environmental products and carbon as a commodity. Russell’s experience spans across advising on issues of greenhouse gas accounting and management, supply chain carbon management, carbon development projects, and other advisory and regulatory matters relating to environmental finance.

Russell has been involved in the creation of first-of-its-kind, new environmental products in the market, such as biodiversity conservation financing, sustainable aviation fuel credits and dealing in other non-greenhouse gas metrics for the purpose of driving finance to combat climate change.

Russell received his LL.M. from Erasmus University Rotterdam and his LL.B. from the National University of Singapore, as part of the NUS LL.B.-LL.M. Exchange Plus Programme. Currently, Russell is also pursuing a Masters of Leadership in Sustainable Finance with Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.
