The impasse of the World Trade Organization Doha Round has galvanized Asia-Pacific trade and investment agreements to proliferate at an unprecedented rate. Regional countries also perceive new-generation agreements as the key strategy to expedite economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. Concluded in 2018, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is a mega-regional trade agreement comprising 11 parties. Since 2021, the United Kingdom, China, Taiwan, Ecuador, and South Korea have either applied, or expressed their intention, to join the CPTPP. The purpose of this event is to provide insight into the CPTPP accession process and economic and legal challenges confronting aspiring economies. Moreover, invited experts will discuss the potential implications of the expanded CPTPP for new Asian regionalism and global trade governance.
Singapore serves as the Chair of the CPTPP Commission in 2022. This event is organized by the Centre for Commercial Law in Asia of the Singapore Management University Yong Pung How School of Law and is funded by the Korea Foundation and the EU Jean Monnet Chair programme.
