Call for Papers

School of Law, Singapore Management University

1 – 2 March 2018

The School of Law at Singapore Management University (SMU) is pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the 3rd Works-in-Progress Conference “IPScholars Asia" on 1-2 March 2018

“IPScholars Asia” is an initiative that has been created in order to provide a forum for scholars researching and writing on IP law-related issues to present and discuss their works-in-progress with colleagues from other universities.

The Inaugural Conference took place in January 2016 and was followed by the 2nd edition in February 2017. Both the 2016 and 2017 editions of the “IPScholars Asia” Conference where hosted by the School of Law at SMU.

Scholars who are interested in presenting their works-in-progress at the 3rd Works-in-Progress Conference “IPScholars Asia" can submit the request to present by responding to this Call for Papers.

We welcome submissions to present at the Conference by senior and junior academics. We also welcome submissions by scholars from a variety of disciplines, including legal scholars, economists, sociologists, anthropologists, etc.

All scholars writing on topics related to IP law-related issues in Asian law, international law, and comparative law are welcome to apply to present their research at the Conference.

For questions related to this Call for Papers, or the Conference in general, email us at arciala@smu.edu.sg

You can also email directly Prof. Irene Calboli, the convener of the “IPScholars Asia" Conference, at irenecalboli@smu.edu.sg

We welcome non-presenting attendees on a space-available basis. Please email us your request to attend the 3rd Works-in-Progress Conference “IPScholars Asia" as a non-presenting attendee at the following email address: arciala@smu.edu.sg

Deadlines

The deadline to submit an abstract and a request to present is 31 October 2017. Late requests will be considered only based on schedule availability.

We will send notifications of acceptance to selected applicants by 30 November 2017.

The schedule of the Conference will be available by 1 February 2018.

There is no paper publication requirement to participate in the 3rd Works-in-Progress Conference “IPScholars Asia".

At the Conference, we will distribute the abstracts of the works-in-progress that will be presented. Presenters are also encouraged (but not obliged) to submit a paper draft before the Conference for circulation.

Conference Schedule

The Conference will start on Thursday, 1 March 2018, at 9 a.m., and continue until 6.30 p.m. (inclusive of tea and lunch breaks). A casual dinner will follow at the conclusion of the first day.

The Conference will resume on Friday, 2 March 2018, at 9 a.m., and continue until 6.30 p.m. (inclusive of tea and lunch breaks). Thereafter there will be a casual farewell dinner for those who have time to attend.

At the Conference, each presenter will have 30 minutes for their presentation and comments/questions from the audience. We encourage participants to reserve a considerable amount of the allotted time for comments/questions.

As in 2016 and 2017, we will have two or more key note speakers during the Conference.

We would like to encourage all participants—presenters and attendees—to attend the whole Conference (i.e. Thursday and Friday) in order to offer to all presenters the same opportunity for feedback on their research.

Funding for the Conference

There will be no registration fee or any other costs associated with attending the 3rd Works-in-Progress Conference “IPScholars Asia".

In addition, we will provide complimentary refreshments, lunch, and dinner during the two days of the Conference.

However, Conference presenters and attendees must cover their own travel-related and accommodation expenses. They will also be responsible for obtaining and covering the costs related to their travel visa and any other necessary travel documents.

Travel Arrangements

Conference presenters and attendees are responsible for arranging their own travel to attend the 3rd Works-in-Progress Conference “IPScholars Asia".

We will block several rooms in hotels near the School of Law that offer a preferred rate. We will post the relevant information on the Conference website by 15 November 2017. Participants can book a room with these hotels directly on their own account.

We also encourage participants to check for affordable hotel rates and other discounted travel arrangements online.

Limited Financial Assistance

We are currently trying to secure funds to partially assist a limited number of IP scholars in financial need to attend the 3rd Works-in-Progress Conference “IPScholars Asia".

Scholars from developing countries who have been accepted to present at the Conference and who cannot otherwise secure financial support to attend the Conference can contact us at arciala@smu.edu.sg and submit a request for partial sponsorship to attend the Conference by 15 December 2017.

Each request will be considered individually based on the availability of funds. We may be able, however, to satisfy only a small number of these requests.

We are also working with potential partners which may directly sponsor travel for a few selected presenters. Updates in this respect will be posted as soon as possible.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR SUBMISSION TO "IPSCHOLARS ASIA" 2018!
