SYNOPSIS
This F2F Masterclass is intended to provide attendees with an in-depth and practical understanding of the legal principles, commercial context and policies underpinning the law on carriage of goods by sea, providing legal professionals with the expertise necessary for success in this vital area of commercial law. Indeed, this Masterclass will underscore to attendees the pivotal role that this area of the law plays within modern commercial law, particularly in relation to trade finance, international sale of goods, and maritime arbitration.
The Masterclass will provide a deep-dive into the main features and commercial significance of the different types of charterparties and bills of lading commonly used in international sea trades, drawing upon real-life case studies. In addition, significant international shipping conventions will be examined from a practical perspective with the benefit of expert insights from leading practitioners in this area of law.

SPEAKERS
Kendall Tan
Clients seek out Kendall to advise on disputes both locally, and across borders. He has dual admission as an Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore and of the Bar of Brunei Darussalam. Kendall is also a qualified Solicitor on the Roll of Solicitors of England and Wales. A “lawyer’s lawyer”, he garners a steady stream of instructions from international law firms and in-house counsel teams. Kendall is amongst the inaugural group of select Senior Accredited Specialists in Maritime and Shipping Law named by the Singapore Academy of Law with effect from 7 January 2019.
Kendall is feted in the peer review publications of Best Lawyers in Singapore as well as Euromoney’s Asialaw Leading Lawyers, in the practice area of Shipping, Maritime & Aviation Law, and for being “exceptionally knowledgeable in both dry and wet matters” and “very commercially minded and responsive”. He finds time for academia as a university adjunct professor in shipping law. He has given expert evidence on maritime law which found endorsement both in decisions by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana.

Ting Yong Hong
Yong Hong is a partner at Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP. He specialises in “dry” shipping, commodities and trade finance. He is regularly instructed by major trading houses, transport and logistics companies, and banks in a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters.
As an advocate, Yong Hong has argued cases before all levels of the Singapore Courts, receiving praise from a five-judge panel of the Court of Appeal for his “candour and tenacity” in advancing his clients’ case. Having previously spent 18 months as APAC regional counsel in a US-based MNC, Yong Hong brings a unique client-side perspective to his practice.
