SYNOPSIS

Baker McKenzie and the SMU Centre for Commercial Law in Asia are proud to bring you this exciting seminar series focusing on sustainability and commercial law.

In the first seminar of the series, speakers from Baker McKenzie, Barramundi Group, Schroders and the Singapore Management University will discuss business opportunities and sentiments on the advancement of ESG initiatives across the Asia Pacific region. Join these market and thought leaders at a constructive and interactive dialogue with complimentary attendance.

Harikumar Pillay
Principal
Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow

Hari is a principal in the Competition & Antitrust Practice Group at Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow. His practice covers competition law and regulation-related advisory work in Singapore and the Southeast Asia region. Hari was the Director of the Enforcement Division at the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS), where he supervised the CCCS’s Intelligence Unit and IT Forensics Taskforce, in addition to the supervision of case teams on various investigations, mergers and notifications.

He was also responsible for managing leniency applications made to the CCCS, overseeing the secret complainant and reward schemes, planning and executing dawn raids, and recording investigative statements of persons under investigations. Hari led teams involved in defending appeals brought against the CCCS’s decisions before the Competition Appeals Board. Prior to joining Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow, Hari completed stints in private practice and as a Justices' Law Clerk with the Singapore Legal Service.

Hari is recognised as one of "Who's Who Legal: Competition Future Leaders - Partners" in the 2020 Who's Who Legal Competition law survey conducted in conjunction with Global Competition Review.

Yip Man
Associate Professor of Law
Director, Centre for Commercial Law in Asia
Singapore Management University

Yip Man is an Associate Professor of Law in the Yong Pung How School of Law at the Singapore Management University. 

She graduated with an LL.B. from the National University of Singapore. After completing her pupilage and a brief stint as an associate at Allen & Gledhill LLP (Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department), she went on to obtain her B.C.L. from the University of Oxford, where she was in residence at Keble College. After completing her B.C.L. studies, she joined WongPartnership LLP (Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group (Commercial & Corporate Disputes) as an associate, where she practised mainly in the area of international commercial arbitration.

Her principal research interests are in unjust enrichment and restitution, equity and trusts, contract law and remedies.

Liu Nengye
Associate Professor of Law
Singapore Management University

Dr Liu Nengye (LLB & LLM, Wuhan, PhD, Ghent) is Associate Professor (with tenure) at Yong Pung How School of Law, Singapore Management University. Prior to moving to Singapore, he taught at three Australian universities (UNE, Adelaide and Macquarie). Most recently, he was Associate Professor at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia and served as the Director of its Centre for Environmental law (2020 – 2022) – the oldest environmental law research centre in the Southern Hemisphere. Assoc Prof Liu is an internationally recognised authority in the fields of the law of the sea and international environmental law. Over the past decade, Assoc Prof Liu has taken the lead to edit two books: “The European Union and the Arctic” (Brill, 2017), “Governing Marine Living Resources in the Polar Regions” (Edward Elgar, 2019); published 50+ refereed journal articles (e.g., Leiden Journal of International Law, Marine Policy, Ocean Development and International Law, International Environmental Agreements: Politics, Law and Economics, Review of European Comparative and International Environmental Law, International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law) and book chapters (e.g., Cambridge University Press, Routledge, Hart); and delivered 100+ presentations.
 

Mini vandePol
Asia Pacific Head, Investigations, Compliance & Ethics Group
Baker McKenzie

Mini vandePol is the Head of Baker McKenzie's Asia Pacific Investigations, Compliance & Ethics Group, after successfully completing three years as the Global Chair. Mini focuses on anti-bribery and corruption, trade sanctions, fraud and other senior executive misconduct investigations across Asia but most particularly in Hong Kong, China and India. Mini has more than 30 years' experience and is the trusted advisor to the boards and audit committees of the Firm's most significant global clients — assisting them to establish and enhance their risk management programs, assess risks in transactional opportunities and credibly investigate transgressions to support a strong commitment to a culture of compliance.


Wong Dan Chi
Head of ESG Integration, APAC
Schroders

Dan Chi Wong is Head of ESG Integration, APAC, at Schroders. Based in Singapore, she supports the company's ESG integration and policy engagement on ESG in APAC. In addition, Ms Wong serves as the Vice-Chair of the Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC). She is also an Adjunct Faculty at Singapore Management University, teaching sustainability at postgraduate level.
 
Ms Wong has specialised in ESG in Asia since 2010, when ESG was in its nascent stages regionally. She received training at the United Nations University on global change and sustainability by leading practitioners from institutions such as The World Bank and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). She started her career at KPMG before joining a dedicated sustainability consultancy, where she worked with corporates and investors on integrating sustainability into strategic decisions. Prior to joining Schroders, she served as the global ESG specialist for one of the largest asset managers headquartered in Asia.
 
Ms Wong majored in Accountancy and Environmental Economics for her Bachelor's and Master's degree respectively. She is also a Chartered Accountant.

James Kwan
Chief Marketing Officer & GM, Singapore
Barramundi Group

James was appointed Chief Marketing Officer of Barramundi Group in 2019, having been involved in the inception of Kühlbarra’s branding and marketing as a consultant since 2014.
 
Prior to joining Barramundi Group, James held senior management positions in the Commonwealth Capital Group, a Singaporean food conglomerate with retail, manufacturing, and logistics businesses. Concurrently, James was Managing and Creative Director of Spinnaker360, an award-winning, multi-disciplinary branding and design agency he founded in 2007.
 
James’ early praxis as a marketer and brand engineer spanned the architectural, design and advertising industry. He is a regular guest lecturer at local tertiary design schools and holds a degree in Studio Arts from the Université du Concordia, Montréal.
