Primer Series: Leading Issues in Law & Technology
AI, Robotics and the Law
Assistant Professor Jerrold SOH
Deputy Director, Centre for Computational Law (CCLAW)
SMU Yong Pung How School of Law
SYNOPSIS
This module explores the field of artificial intelligence and law from a technological starting point. The aim is to equip participants with a nuanced understanding of key legal issues raised by AI grounded on a clear, hype-free picture of what the technology is (and isn’t). The session will begin by carefully defining “AI” before considering three specific, important questions. Should AI have legal personality? Who is and should be liable for AI-related harms? Finally, when are algorithms biased?
This module is part of Primer Series: Leading Issues in Law & Technology.
Developments in AI, blockchain, crypto-currencies, smart contracts and other emerging technologies have far-reaching implications for legal professionals in various areas of practice. As the Singapore Judiciary has emphasised, it is crucial for legal professionals to stay abreast of the latest developments in this regard.
This primer series provides legal professionals with a one-stop avenue to acquire updated knowhow about key legal and regulatory issues surrounding the use of AI, blockchain, smart contracts and other emerging technologies. Taught by leading experts in their respective fields, participants will be equipped with a nuanced appreciation of the practical legal and regulatory issues that have and are likely to arise. Instructors will peel away the jargon to demystify the underlying technology, so that participants can gain insights into the available strategies that they and their clients can embrace in response to, or anticipation of, technology adoption and innovation.
The primer series comprises the following 5 modules. Participants can pick and choose which module(s) to attend.
Jerrold Soh is an Assistant Professor of Law at SMU and Deputy Director of the Centre for Computational Law. He teaches the Law and Torts. His research centrally asks how technology can, will, and should be used in the provision of justice. Specific areas of focus include artificial intelligence liability, algorithmic governance, computational analysis of law, and legal analytics. Jerrold programmed his first website in 2012. He graduated in 2018 from NUS with first class honours in both Law and Economics and holds LLM from Harvard Law School.
