Synopsis
In this panel presentation, guest speakers are invited to share their working experiences in connection with intellectual property law. Speakers include representatives from the industry, including the digital music industry, patent database and strategic analysis business as well as a global leading company in the medical imaging technology. Speakers also include representative from the World Intellectual Property Organization and Singapore’s A*Star. In particular, speakers will discuss to what extent intellectual assets and intellectual property rights may contribute to the core competitiveness and commercial success of the company and, in some instances, the opportunities and challenges they have encountered in obtaining, managing and enforcing the rights.
About the Speakers

Candra Darusman first joined the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva, in April 2001, as Consultant, and is now the Deputy Director at the WIPO Office in Singapore. Prior to 2001, he was the General Manager of the Indonesian Collective Management Organization (KCI), and the Secretary General of the Indonesian Musicians Foundation (YAMI). He is a graduate (SE – PhD. candidate) from the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia, where he served as a researcher, lecturer and as Assistant Professor from 1982 to 1985. He also served as Director of the Indonesian Guild of Composers, member of the Indonesian National Copyright Council, the Director of the Indonesian Musicians Cooperative (KOSMINDO), and a member of the Anti-Piracy Coalition of the Indonesian copyright industries.

Steven Frank is an online/mobile digital entertainment and gaming veteran with over 15 years’ experience in building and growing businesses in the region. After starting his career in engineering and product roles at Intel & Martin Marietta*, Steven joined Riot Entertainment (mobile content) as a founding member of their Asia team in 2000. Following that he has run activities in the region for such companies as THQ Inc (console, PC, mobile gaming), WildTangent (PC, online, mobile gaming) and Deezer (music streaming). Steven continues to champion digital disruption in the entertainment space, and to work to create new channels to market for the industry.

Claire Lim was appointed as part of Patsnap's leadership team in Singapore and works with various stakeholders in the industry from governmental bodies to MNCs and SMEs, to support them towards key decision-making in the intellectual property sector. She is responsible for the overall new business revenue generated by PatSnap’s ASEAN sales operation, the recruitment and training of sales directors, managers and sales executives across all levels as well as strategizing for new market strategy in the Singapore office. PatSnap is the leading IP Analytic and Management platform that empowers even non IP-proficient users to understand this competitive landscape. By leveraging on our global patent database, users are able to perform big data analytic and create competitive landscapes to track trends, clusters and white spaces. With a strong foundation in IP built during her time at the Intellectual Property of Singapore (IPOS) in her previous role, she is well placed to understand government policies aimed at promoting the IP industry and to appreciate the nuances of the IP marketplace. Her experience in the IP industry from both the private and public sector gives her a comprehensive view of the IP landscape, and she sees the potential of this burgeoning niche industry to bring immense benefits to all its stakeholders.

Syaheed Msbi is an experienced music industry professional, with a specialty in licensing, regional strategy & marketing, and talent development. Between taking on regional roles at fast growing companies like digital distributor Believe Digital and starting up BEDSTY, a company that evolved from a production team to an events company, and later as a reputable artist management company, Syaheed understands the nuances and challenges IP owners and users face across the board. As a company builder, possessing a strong understanding and appreciation of brand, people and product development, he is passionate about building amazing companies, products and experiences that benefit people and culture. He volunteers his time and energy as VP of The Music Society, Singapore (SGMUSO), a non-profit organization determined to facilitate and build a vibrant and sustainable industry for Singapore music.

Travis Monke has 18 years of experience in the healthcare industry and has held senior leadership roles in product development, engineering, marketing, sales, and business development with General Electric (GE). His current role is as leader of the GE MRI business for the Asia Pacific and India. Travis joined GE in 1998 as an electronics design engineer in the MRI Business and has been awarded 3 patents. He then led the engineering team for the RF coils group and drove the creation and expansion of new product development teams in China and India. Following this, he was a Product Marketing Manager and led the introduction of a new MRI system targeted for expansion into emerging markets and also managed the 1.5T MRI product portfolio. Additional roles with GE include the Chief Marketing Officer of the Home Health, Aging Services Business, a new business expansion in GE Healthcare that was combined into a joint-venture with Intel. In 2011, Travis moved to Southeast Asia to lead the MRI business in ASEAN, and in 2014 he transitioned to his current role. Travis holds a bachelor degree in electrical engineering from The Ohio State University, a master degree from Marquette University, and an Executive MBA from Kellogg School of Management, Northwester University.

Nick Sim is Legal Counsel at the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR). After being called to the Singapore Bar as an advocate and solicitor, he honed his craft as an intellectual property lawyer in private practice. He now focuses on structuring, negotiating, and drafting technology-related contracts, and advising on legal and regulatory issues, which affect research and development. Nick also advises on corporate and commercial matters, and matters involving IP, technology, and data protection. Nick has authored and published articles on various aspects of IP law in the Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice (published by the Oxford University Press). He mentors law students under the NUS Law Alumni Mentors Programme. Nick graduated from the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, winning a book prize in corporate finance law and practice. He holds a specialist LLM in IP Law (with Distinction) from University College London.
