| | | | CCLA Lunchtime Seminar - Regulating Global Value Chains: The Promises and Perils of Due Diligence Laws SYNOPSIS
This talk examines the emerging global trend of Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) laws, which have gained significant recognition among scholars, legislators, and private sector actors as a key regulatory tool. The trend crystallized with the adoption of the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) in 2024, currently under review for amendments. Through theoretical and structural analysis, the presentation evaluates HRDD laws using the CSDDD and other national due diligence frameworks as case studies. It identifies critical deficiencies and problematic elements within these legal instruments, questioning their effectiveness as mechanisms for regulating Global Value Chains (GVCs) and strengthening protections for human rights, environmental sustainability, and workers' rights.
