SYNOPSIS

This is the final module of the SMU-IPAS Graduate Certificate in Insolvency and Restructuring programme. This module will integrate and provide a coherent overview of the various insolvency and restructuring concepts, knowledge and tools taught in Modules 1 to 10. This will be accomplished through a combination of lecture and case study that is drawn from an actual real-life restructuring case where participants will be expected to apply what they have learned in the programme to analyse and recommend different restructuring outcomes. Participants will also be exposed to and provided the opportunity to discuss emerging issues and current developments within the Insolvency and Restructuring industry.

Finally, there will be a discussion with senior industry practitioners who will provide guidance on career and development opportunities in the industry.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the module, participants will be able to:

  • Gain an understanding and coherent overview of the various insolvency and restructuring concepts, knowledge, and tools

  • Acquire the ability to apply various insolvency and restructuring knowledge and skill sets into analysing a distressed and/ or restructuring situation

  • Gain the knowledge and awareness of emerging issues and current developments in the Insolvency and Restructuring industry

  • Know the various potential career opportunities and pathways within the Insolvency and Restructuring Industry



WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • Newly qualified accountants and lawyers pursuing R&I practice or mid-career accountants/ lawyers from other specialisations

  • Restructuring/ Financial Advisers

  • Bank/ Lender work-out groups



PREREQUISITE
Participants should preferably be a degree holder, in any discipline, and have at least one year of working experience.


ASSESSMENT
As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.


 

SPEAKERS

Gary Soh
Gary is a Partner of Restructuring & Forensics at RSM Corporate Advisory Pte Ltd. Prior to joining the firm, Gary was with a Big 4 accounting firm for over 10 years in the restructuring services division. For more than 16 years, he has been assisting a diverse range of public-listed companies and small- and medium-sized enterprises in various industries that include construction, shipping, financial services, oil and gas, retail, law firms, food and beverage, and manufacturing businesses. Gary is experienced in assisting businesses in insolvency and restructuring assignments that include liquidation, receivership, judicial management, scheme of arrangement, and turnaround consulting. In addition, he also worked on cases in areas such as financial investigation, litigation support, and independent business reviews. Gary is a Chartered Accountant of Singapore, Member of Insolvency Practitioners Association of Singapore and a licensed Insolvency Practitioner. He is a founding executive committee member of the Young Insolvency Practitioners’ Committee of the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Singapore (IPAS) and is currently the co-chairperson. He is also involved as an instructor for the SMU Insolvency & Restructuring Course (for the accountancy and law students) and assisted in preparing the questions for the assessments.



Sheila Ng
Sheila Ng is the Co-Deputy Head of the Restructuring & Insolvency practice in Rajah & Tann Singapore. She has deep experience and expertise in corporate restructuring and contentious insolvency, as well as financial disputes, investigations, fraud and asset recovery. Sheila has been at the forefront of major insolvencies in the region, having acted and continuing to act for the liquidators of Dynamic Oil Trading (part of the O.W. Bunker Group), MF Global Singapore, and BSI Bank. She also has experience acting for debtors, as well as other stakeholders and creditors, in their corporate restructuring exercises, including in cross border cases. Sheila also acted successfully for a listed company debtor in Singapore’s first application for super priority status to be granted over unencumbered assets in respect of rescue financing.

Sheila is a Fellow of IPAS. She is also a Fellow of INSOL International and a member of the International Insolvency Institute’s NextGen Leadership Program. She was featured in INSOL’s Young Practitioner Spotlight in 2022, which seeks to highlight rising stars of the insolvency and restructuring industry. Sheila was also featured in the 2020 edition of Global Investigations Review’s 40 Under 40 – a list of 40 accomplished young investigation specialists from all over the world, and listed as a Future Leader in Who’s Who Legal: Investigations 2022. Sheila is also the Co-Chairperson of International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation’s Singapore network.


Wilson Zhu
Wilson Zhu is a Partner of Rajah & Tann Singapore’s Restructuring & Insolvency practice. He specialises in commercial litigation before the Singapore Courts and arbitral tribunals, with an emphasis on contentious insolvency litigation. Wilson regularly acts for financial institutions and insolvency practitioners in complex restructuring matters, and has assisted the High Court of Singapore as lead counsel in several leading judgments on insolvency law.


Wilson is also a fellow of the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Singapore, and co-authors the Singapore Academy of Law’s annual reviews on insolvency judgments.

Participants must not be absent from each day of the event for more than 15 minutes.
